You can bring a used car from Slovakia and register it for the first time in Slovenia, but do not decide whether to buy based solely on its price or advertisement. Before paying, you need the original documents, a matching VIN, verifiable seller identity and authority to sell, suitable proof of purchase, the first-use date and mileage, and a plan for lawful transport. Because the car is coming from another EU Member State, the official Slovenian term is pridobitev vozila (acquisition of a vehicle), although the word import is often used in everyday language. 1
Set your purchase conditions before paying
First decide what would cause you to walk away from the purchase. eUprava advises you to ask the seller for the original vehicle documentation and inspect it carefully because it may be forged; checking the papers alone does not, however, authenticate them. 2 Compare the VIN on the car, in both parts of the Slovak vehicle registration certificate, where they have been issued, on the invoice or contract, and on the conformity evidence. Resolve any discrepancy before transferring funds, not after collection.
| Decision | What to check | Consequence |
|---|---|---|
| Originals and VIN? | Documents, VIN, registration certificate and proof of purchase | An unresolved discrepancy stops the purchase. 2 |
| Is the seller entitled to sell? | Identity, ownership and authority | It remains unresolved without evidence. 2 |
| Complete documentation for Slovenia? | Invoice and CoC or registration certificate; without unified European approval, technical data and conformity evidence too | Arrange it before purchase. 1 |
| Register extract available? | Eligible access or the seller's PDF | Not a guarantee of ownership or condition. 3, 4 |
| Correct VAT branch? | First use, supply and mileage | The advertisement is not enough. 5 |
| Inputs for DMV? | Type or tariff classification, fuel, CO2, kW and EURO | No amount without them. 6 |
The Slovak Overenie vozidla service is not an anonymous search facility open to everyone. Data from the national register may be accessed by the holder of a valid electronically chipped vehicle registration certificate, Part I, or by the user of a chipped electronic identity card who is the owner, holder or electronically authorised representative of the owner or holder. 3 If you do not meet these conditions, ask the seller to carry out the check and email you the PDF. The extract provides information from the register; it is not a guarantee of ownership, the absence of all defects or the current mechanical condition. 3 4
For the Slovenian procedure at an expert organisation, you need an invoice as proof of purchase and either the CoC (Certificate of Conformity) or the vehicle registration certificate issued by the competent Slovak authority. If the car does not have unified European approval, documents containing technical data and evidence of conformity with technical specifications or equivalent regulations are also required. 1 Before signing, therefore, establish which documents actually exist, whether the car has been modified and whether all the data match. An invoice or contract alone does not resolve outstanding questions about the seller's identity, ownership and authority to sell; support them with separate evidence for the specific transaction.
Complete the sale and deregistration in Slovakia
For Slovak deregistration of a vehicle to another country, the owner or holder submits the vehicle registration certificate, Part I, Part II if issued, the required statutory documents, proof of identity, the details of the incoming foreign holder or owner, and the assigned registration plate. A lost or stolen document or plate is not surrendered. Nor does the plate have to be surrendered if the previous holder has notified the police that they will retain it under section 116(17). 7 Before paying, agree with the seller in writing who will complete this step, what they will hand over to you and when.
From 1 September 2026, an important condition applies to an absent buyer. If the incoming foreign holder or owner is not present, registering that person generally requires a written power of attorney or proof of acquisition bearing their authenticated signature. The stated exceptions include a close person and appropriate electronic authorisation through the official service. 8 7 If you will not attend the procedure, agree the required form of signature or authorisation before entering into the transaction.
The electronic route also requires a current check. Section 119(5), as in force, allows the owner or holder to apply electronically with a qualified electronic signature and does not impose a restriction based on the issue date of Part I. The UPVS service overview, however, displays a condition for the owner's application, with or without the issue of export plates, that Part I must have been issued after 31st May 2010. Because the sources conflict on this condition, contact the competent authority or check the live form before relying on the electronic channel. 9 7
Also check the originality-check assessment. Unless the holder remains the same or the car was first registered no more than 60 days earlier, an assessment of spôsobilé no more than 15 days old is acceptable. For export, an assessment of dočasne spôsobilé, likewise no more than 15 days old, may also be acceptable, but only if the vehicle identification data are legible and can be reliably established. 7 Check for the specific case whether an exemption applies to your car and whether the appropriate result is already in the register.
Choose one verifiable transport option
The Slovenian guide lists three alternatives: towing with an appropriately insured towing vehicle, a specialist vehicle carrier, or driving the purchased car yourself. 2 Do not combine these options into a single package. Before collection, choose one main route and gather its evidence, price, date and insurance terms.
| Option | What you need | Limitation | Cost |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tow-truck transport | An appropriately insured towing vehicle | Confirm the terms in writing. | Request a quote 2 |
| Specialist vehicle carrier | A quotation and collection evidence | The sources do not specify the terms or insurance. | Subject to quotation 2 |
| Self-driving | Temporary registration, a registration certificate, a V-series plate and insurance | Validity is no more than 30 days from deregistration; check plate recognition and route cover separately. | To be determined 2, 7 |
To drive the purchased car yourself, it must be temporarily registered abroad; the plates and vehicle registration certificate are also obtained there. 2 On request, Slovakia issues a V-series export registration number and plate. The associated documents and plate are valid for no more than 30 days from deregistration, and the deregistered vehicle may be used on the road only with that plate. 7 This does not establish that the plate is recognised throughout the planned route or that the insurance covers every transit country. Before leaving, therefore, obtain written confirmation of the validity of the registration and the temporal and territorial insurance cover for your chosen route.
Keep conformity, taxes and registration separate in Slovenia
For a previously registered used car from another EU Member State, the stated Slovenian conformity procedure is identifikacija in ocena tehničnega stanja (vehicle identification and assessment of technical condition). 10 This is not a pre-purchase inspection, a statutory roadworthiness inspection or registration. The final procedure, additional evidence, any remedial work, cost and duration depend on the specific vehicle, its approval, documents, technical condition, modifications and the assessment of the competent expert organisation.
An advertisement describing the car as “used” does not determine its VAT treatment. FURS regards a vehicle as new if it is factory-new or is supplied before 6 months have elapsed since first use or has travelled no more than 6,000 km. It regards a vehicle as used only if it is supplied after 6 months have elapsed and has travelled more than 6,000 km. 5 Before paying, therefore, document the first-use date, the acquisition or supply date, and the verified mileage.
If, as a private acquirer, you are not identified for VAT and the car is new under this test, you must report the acquisition using the DDV-PPS form within 15 days of acquisition. The stated Slovenian rate is 22%, and the tax base includes the car's price and the assessed DMV; registration is not possible without proof of VAT payment. 5 If the conditions are not met, do not apply this special calculation by assumption; instead, establish the tax treatment of the specific invoice and seller.
Unless an exemption has been proved, Slovenian motor vehicle tax (DMV) applies when a covered motor vehicle is first put into circulation or first registered in Slovenia; taxpayers include an acquirer of a vehicle from another EU Member State. 6 The amount cannot be established without the vehicle data. The vehicle type or tariff classification, fuel type, combined CO2 emissions, engine power in kW and/or EURO emissions category are taken into account. 6 An indicative calculation is therefore not a decision and does not replace verified input data.
For a car whose age does not exceed the 4-year limit, the Slovenian guide does not require a Slovenian statutory roadworthiness inspection. For an older vehicle or a different document situation, the assigned sources do not determine the timing of the inspection or recognition of a specific foreign result, so obtain a current decision for your car before registration. 2
The vehicle registration body issues the vehicle registration certificate and the prescribed number of Slovenian plates. The certificate's validity is tied to the period of validity of the roadworthiness inspection, compulsory motor third-party liability insurance, payment of the annual road-use charge and settlement of the other prescribed obligations. 11 At first registration, you receive new plates and pay the annual charge, the registration fee and the new vehicle registration certificate form; the assigned source gives no amounts. First registration cannot be completed electronically. 2
Build your budget without a misleading total
Below are mandatory, conditional and optional items for which the assigned sources do not provide the final price for the specific case. Obtain written quotations and decisions, choose only one main transport option and do not add alternatives together. While any required item remains unresolved, a total would not be reliable.
| Item | Amount | Condition |
|---|---|---|
| Vehicle purchase price | To be determined | The invoice or contract determines it. 2 |
| Optional pre-purchase inspection | Request a quote | If you order it; check the scope and price. 12 |
| Slovak originality check | To be determined | If no exemption applies; check the price. 7 |
| Tow-truck transport | Request a quote | Instead of the other options. 2 |
| Specialist vehicle carrier | Subject to quotation | Instead of the other options. 2 |
| V-series plate, documents, insurance and journey | To be determined | For self-driving; check the costs and validity for the route. 2, 7 |
| Vehicle identification and assessment of technical condition | To be determined | Depends on the vehicle, documents, modifications and assessment. 10 |
| Conditional VAT for a vehicle classified as new for VAT purposes | To be determined | For a vehicle classified as new for VAT purposes, acquired by a private individual not identified for VAT: 22% of the base comprising the price and assessed DMV. 5 |
| Slovenian motor vehicle tax (DMV) | To be determined | Based on the vehicle data and tax assessment. 6 |
| Slovenian statutory roadworthiness inspection | To be determined | For a vehicle whose age does not exceed the 4-year limit, the guide does not require it; for an older vehicle, first check whether a Slovenian statutory roadworthiness inspection is required and whether the foreign result is recognised; if an inspection is required, check the price. 2 |
| Slovenian motor third-party liability insurance | Request a quote | A quotation for the vehicle, separate from export insurance. 11 |
| Annual road-use charge | To be determined | Check before first registration. 2, 11 |
| Registration fee | To be determined | Check with the vehicle registration body. 2 |
| New vehicle registration certificate form | To be determined | Check with the vehicle registration body. 2 |
| Slovenian registration plates | To be determined | Check the price when registering. 11, 2 |
Open checklist in chronological order
Mark each step as complete only when you have the stated evidence and the VIN and personal details match.
| Step | Evidence | When | Your check |
|---|---|---|---|
| Check the seller and register | Identity, authority and register extract | Before payment 3, 4 | To check |
| Inspect the originals and VIN | Matching vehicle, registration certificate, purchase and conformity evidence | Before signing 2 | To check |
| Gather purchase and technical evidence | Invoice, CoC or registration certificate and required technical documents | Before collection 1 | To check |
| Arrange deregistration and representation | Registration certificate, plate or exception, details and the required authorisation | Before transport 7, 8 | To check |
| Choose one transport option | Quotation or valid registration, plate and insurance | Before collection 2, 7 | To check |
| Complete the conformity procedure | The organisation's decision | After arrival in Slovenia 10 | To check |
| Resolve VAT and DMV | Classification, filing, assessment and payment | Before registration 5, 6 | To check |
| Arrange the required roadworthiness inspection and insurance | Evidence and policy | Before first registration 2, 11 | To check |
| Complete first registration in person | Registration certificate, plates and settled obligations | At the end 11, 2 | To check |
Documents or conditions still need checking. Do not treat the file as complete.
Frequently asked questions
Is this an import or an acquisition of a vehicle?
Because it comes from another EU Member State, the Slovenian eUprava calls the procedure pridobitev vozila (acquisition of a vehicle). The conversational term import does not change this official classification. 1
Is a previously registered car always used for VAT purposes?
No. It is new if it is factory-new, supplied before 6 months have elapsed since first use or has travelled no more than 6,000 km; it is used only after 6 months and above 6,000 km. For a private individual's vehicle classified as new for VAT purposes, where that individual is not identified for VAT, the DDV-PPS filing within 15 days and payment before registration apply. 5
Can you use Overenie vozidla yourself?
Only with a valid chipped Part I or with a chipped electronic identity card as the owner, holder or electronically authorised representative. Otherwise, ask the seller for the PDF. The extract does not guarantee ownership, the absence of defects or the mechanical condition. 3, 4
Can you drive with a Slovak V-series plate?
Yes, if one is issued on request. The plate and documents are valid for no more than 30 days from deregistration; the deregistered vehicle may be used on the road only with that plate. Check recognition and insurance for the route separately. 7
What do you need if you are not present?
From 1 September 2026, you generally need a written power of attorney or proof of acquisition bearing an authenticated signature; the stated exceptions include a close person and appropriate electronic authorisation. Because the sources conflict, check the electronic channel in the live form or with the authority. 8, 7, 9
Do you need a roadworthiness inspection, and can you register online?
For a vehicle whose age does not exceed the 4-year limit, the guide does not require the inspection; otherwise, check the requirement and recognition of the foreign result. You cannot complete first registration electronically, and before it you must arrange the roadworthiness position, insurance, charge and other obligations. 2, 11
Check whether a pre-purchase inspection is available
For a pre-purchase inspection, check availability and terms for the car, location and date. Coverage, appointment, scope, price and outcome are not confirmed in advance. 12
