Used car from Denmark to Slovenia: process, costs and documents

You can bring a used car from Denmark to Slovenia, but do not decide to buy based only on the advert and price.

You can bring a used car from Denmark to Slovenia, but do not decide to buy based only on the advert and price. Before paying, you should at least have clarity on the original documents, matching VIN, the seller's identity, ownership and authority to sell, the contents of the bill of sale, the tax classification and a lawful way of getting the vehicle to Slovenia. Because this is a movement between EU Member States, the Slovenian procedure uses the term acquisition of a vehicle, although in everyday language it is often called an import. 1

Decision before payment

Ask the seller for the original documentation and examine it carefully. eUprava warns that documents can be forged; examining the originals therefore does not in itself confirm their authenticity. 2 Break the decision down into verifiable checkpoints and do not proceed with payment if you cannot obtain essential evidence.

Seller, VIN and Danish bill of sale

The name in the registration document does not in itself confirm the identity of the person signing the contract, their ownership or their authority to sell. Check these three matters separately. Compare the VIN directly on the car, in the registration document, in any CoC and in the bill of sale. Motorreg's public no-login service allows you to search for a Danish vehicle by registration number, VIN or vehicle identifier and may display technical data, condition, inspections, insurance and permits. However, it discloses the owner only to a person who is already registered as the owner or user, so it is neither public proof of ownership nor a guarantee of a complete history. 3

Search Bilbogen by VIN or debtor details for registered mortgages and retention of title. The register is not an owners register, returns vehicle data only where there is a current or historical security interest, and does not establish the vehicle's general condition or its accident or ownership history. 4 A pre-purchase inspection can be an additional practical check, but it is not a statutory roadworthiness inspection, a conformity procedure, a title check or a guarantee that every defect will be found.

The Danish bill of sale must contain the sale date, the seller's name, the buyer's name and address, both signatures, and the VIN, make or registration number. The standard online buyer-side re-registration route requires the registration certificate and MitID. The new owner must re-register or deregister the vehicle within four weekdays after purchase. Until the change is made, the seller continues to pay the vehicle taxes and motor third-party liability insurance; if the buyer misses the deadline, the seller may ask Motorstyrelsen to deregister the vehicle and attach the bill of sale. 5 The packet does not establish the complete route for a foreign buyer without MitID, so before paying, agree a feasible procedure, responsible person and evidence with the Danish party.

Deregistration, export and transport to Slovenia

Slovenia's eUprava presents three alternatives: transport by a towing vehicle, a specialist vehicle carrier or self-driving the purchased car. For the first option, the towing vehicle must be appropriately insured. For self-driving, the purchased car must be temporarily registered abroad, where you also obtain the plates and vehicle registration certificate; the rules on issue and validity, and the insurance cover, must be checked for the Danish arrangements and the entire route. 2

Deregistration, export and transport to Slovenia
OptionWhat you needLimitationCost
Transport by a towing vehicleAn arrangement and an appropriately insured towing vehicle.Check liability and handover arrangements for the journey.Request a quote 2
Specialist vehicle carrierFor planning: a written quotation and collection and delivery terms. The packet does not specify the international carrier's documentary conditions for this purchase.Subject to quotation 2
Self-drivingTemporary registration, plates, a vehicle registration certificate and insurance for the driver and route. The Danish sticker is valid for no more than seven days and only for the named driver; check acceptance in every country.Unknown 2, 8

A Danish temporary sticker may be issued for an unregistered vehicle for a stated special purpose, including export from the exporter's address. It is valid for no more than seven days, its price includes third-party liability insurance, and only the person named in the permit may drive. The holder must check acceptance of the sticker in every country on the route: the Danish page does not provide general cross-border authorisation and expressly confirms only travel from Denmark to or through Germany, not the entire route to Slovenia. 8

Motorstyrelsen's five-step process involving an extended inspection, valuation, surrender of plates and evidence of ownership, sale and actual export applies to an exporter seeking a refund of Danish registration tax. It is not evidence that every export must follow this process. 9

Procedures after arrival in Slovenia

For the application to a Slovenian expert organisation, attach an invoice as proof of purchase and either the Certificate of Conformity (CoC) or the registration document issued by the competent Danish authority. If the vehicle does not have unified European approval, documents containing technical data and evidence of compliance with technical specifications or equivalent rules are additionally required. 1 For a previously registered used car from another EU Member State, the stated conformity procedure is vehicle identification and assessment of technical condition. This is not a pre-purchase inspection, a statutory roadworthiness inspection or registration; the final scope, evidence, cost, duration and outcome depend on the particular vehicle and the competent organisation's assessment. 10

For tax purposes, first determine the vehicle's age and mileage. FURS treats a vehicle as new if it is factory-new or supplied before six months have elapsed since first use or has travelled no more than 6,000 km. It is used only if it is supplied after six months have elapsed and has travelled more than 6,000 km. Previous registration or the word ‘used’ in an advert is therefore not sufficient. Separately, before paying, check the seller's status and the VAT treatment on the invoice, because classifying the vehicle by age and mileage is not a complete tax analysis of the transaction. 6

If you are a private acquirer who is not identified for VAT and the car is new under this test, you must report the acquisition on form DDV-PPS within 15 days of acquisition. The stated rate is 22% on a taxable amount that includes the car's price and the assessed DMV; registration is not permitted without proof that VAT has been paid. 6 If no supported exemption has been established, DMV arises when the covered vehicle is first put into use or first registered in Slovenia, and the person acquiring a vehicle from another EU Member State is also liable. The amount is not fixed: it depends on the vehicle type or tariff classification, fuel, combined CO2 emissions, power in kW and/or EURO emissions standard, and the assessment. 7

Under the described procedure, a vehicle not more than four years old does not require a Slovenian statutory roadworthiness inspection. For an older vehicle or a different set of documents, the packet does not determine when an inspection is required or whether particular foreign evidence is recognised, so obtain a decision for the specific case. 2

The vehicle registration body issues the vehicle registration certificate and the prescribed number of Slovenian plates. The certificate's validity is tied to the applicable statutory roadworthiness inspection period, compulsory Slovenian motor third-party liability insurance, payment of the annual road-use charge and the other prescribed obligations. 11 At first registration, you obtain new plates and pay the annual road-use charge, the registration service fee and the cost of the new vehicle registration certificate form; the source gives no amounts. First registration cannot be completed electronically. This is a limitation of the channel, not evidence that the buyer must necessarily attend in person or that an authorised representative cannot be used. 2

Budget without a false total

As none of the required monetary values for the particular car has been determined, do not publish a total. Obtain current quotations and decisions; 22% is only a conditional VAT rate, not a final amount.

Frequently asked questions

Is bringing a car from Denmark legally an acquisition or an import?

Because Denmark and Slovenia are in the EU, eUprava calls the procedure an acquisition of a vehicle from another Member State, not an import from a third country. ‘Import’ can be an everyday term, but use the acquisition branch for the official steps. 1

Do Motorreg and Bilbogen prove ownership and the complete history?

No. Motorreg allows a no-login search by registration number, VIN or identifier and can display technical, inspection, insurance and permit data, but it shows the owner only to a person already registered as the owner or user. Bilbogen shows mortgages and retention of title by VIN or debtor only where there is a current or historical entry. It is neither an owners register nor a check of condition, accidents or the complete ownership history. 3, 4

What must a Danish bill of sale contain, and what is the deadline after purchase?

It must contain the sale date, the seller's name, the buyer's name and address, both signatures, and the VIN, make or registration number. Standard online re-registration requires the registration certificate and MitID. The new owner must re-register or deregister the vehicle within four weekdays. Until the change is made, the seller pays the vehicle taxes and third-party liability insurance; if the buyer misses the deadline, the seller may request deregistration and attach the bill of sale. 5

Can I drive to Slovenia with a Danish temporary sticker?

Not automatically. To self-drive, you need temporary registration, plates and a vehicle registration certificate from abroad. The Danish sticker is for an unregistered vehicle and a special purpose, is valid for no more than seven days, includes third-party liability insurance and may be used only by the named driver. Check its recognition for the entire route to Slovenia. 2, 8

Must every car go through the Danish five-step export process?

No. The five steps apply to the branch in which the exporter seeks a refund of Danish registration tax; they include an extended inspection, valuation, surrender of plates and evidence of ownership, sale and actual export. This branch is not mandatory for every export. 9

When can an advertised used car be treated as new for VAT purposes?

If it is factory-new, supplied before six months have elapsed since first use, or has travelled no more than 6,000 km. It is used only if it is supplied after six months have elapsed since first use and has travelled more than 6,000 km. If you are not identified for VAT and the vehicle is new for tax purposes, the DDV-PPS filing within 15 days and the conditional 22% treatment described above apply. Check the seller's status and the invoice treatment separately. 6

Check the possibility of a pre-purchase inspection

The CarAudit website was publicly accessible on 14 September 2026 with order and contact options. If you want an inspection before paying, check there for current availability and terms for the particular vehicle, location and date. This does not confirm coverage in Denmark, appointment availability, scope, price or outcome. 12
